Cool Mom by Daphne
August 19, 2008 by MOM · Leave a Comment
Daphne Brogdon (a TV host, standup comic, and a mom) has a great site for moms entitled, ‘Cool Mom‘ . Her site is chock full of always-entertaining short videos about her views on various mom-topics. Her lighthearted and opinionated commentary is refreshing. Every mom has a unique set of motherhood experiences and Daphne hits the nail on the head more often then not, … at least in my opinion.
Baby Names are Evolving
July 9, 2008 by MOM · Leave a Comment
Baby names are evolving at an increasing rate according to comparisons with favorite baby names from years past. It seems more parents are willing and even eager to give their children names that are unique to them. Although Michael, Mary, John, Linda, David, Kathy and the like are still hugely popular you’ll only see one of them, Michael, on the 2007 list below.
Here’s a list of the most popular baby names from 1950:
Boys name / Girls name
1. James / Linda
2. Robert / Mary
3. John / Patricia
4. Michael / Barbara
5. David / Susan
6. William / Nancy
7. Richard / Deborah
8. Thomas / Sandra
9. Charles / Carol
10. Gary / Kathleen

Here’s the list of most popular baby names from 2007:
1. Jacob / Emily
2. Michael / Isabella
3. Ethan / Emma
4. Joshua / Ava
5. Daniel / Madison
6. Christopher / Sophia
7. Anthony / Olivia
8. William / Abigail
9. Matthew / Hannah
10. Andrew / Elizabeth
Choosing a name is one of the more interesting tasks parents have to perform and we all handle it in our own way. Some people dwell on it for months or even years in advance of giving birth and others wait until the baby is in their arms. Neither method is better or worse then the other and most people we’ve met are OK with their given names so no harm, no foul.

Our children’s names are: Brian, Kevin, Dustin, and Colin. The dog is Pooch and the cat is Moon. Maybe not the most unique names out there, but the kids sure are and that’s the important thing, not a name.
Live Science has an interesting article on baby names worth checking out at: Baby Names.
Google Moms
June 19, 2008 by MOM · Leave a Comment
I just came across this ‘tribute to our moms‘ page Google created to honor some of the moms of their staff. Very nice of them. I suppose we can call them Google Moms?
I want to know if Google is employing child laborers. The children of these women can’t be out of high school yet!

Just a few of the moms out of a bunch. Check it out at www.google.com/moms
Site for the Science-Minded Mom
May 31, 2008 by MOM · Leave a Comment
Gwen Dewar’s motherhood style and methods incorporates what she learned during her education at UC Berkeley, and her subsequent Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where she was trained in anthropology, behavioral ecology, primatology, and evolutionary and comparative psychology.

Her research has focused on the evolutionary origins of intelligence, social learning, and teaching. These interests led her to study cognitive development (in human children and in nonhuman primates) and the evolution of parenting. Clearly there is a vast amount of information gathered over time that can be helpful to us in understanding motherhood and parenting. When Gwen found there were too few resources available for parents that included evidence-based research she decided to start her site, Parenting Science.
Her site includes information on attachment parenting, stress, potty training, preschool social skills development and other interesting and useful research. Whether you’re a science-minded parent or you’ve avoided “science” ever since high school, you’ll learn more about parenting with a quick visit to Gwen’s site so we recommend a visit.
Happy parenting.

The Writing Mamas Salon
March 21, 2008 by MOM · Leave a Comment
Dawn Yun and a small group of moms in the San Francisco Bay area formed a writing “club” for moms back in 2004 and it continues to inspire moms who want to write, as well as, moms who read what they write . Writing Mamas Salon has grown popular and new local chapters have begun springing up in other parts of the country. What a wonderful idea! Not only a way to share motherhood stories with other moms, but a way to put the more meaningful experiences and events into writing to be shared with moms all over.
For more information visit their site here: Writing Mamas Salon

How NOT to Discipline Your Child
March 9, 2008 by MOM · Leave a Comment
Granted there may be times you feel like, and perhaps should, hose down an unruly and dangerous teen, there is never a reason to stoop to the level Ms. Ramirez did in Florida when she sprayed her temper tantrum-throwing 2 year old with a high pressure water hose at a car wash.
Here’s an excerpt from the news report on Breitbart:
Authorities have arrested a mother who was videotaped spraying her young daughter with a high-pressure water hose at a Florida car wash. Deputies arrested Niurka Ramirez in Orlando on Friday on a child abuse charge.
Ramirez says she was trying to discipline her 2-year-old daughter for throwing a temper tantrum.
She told authorities she did not use the high-pressure feature on the hose when spraying the child.
Ms. Ramirez was released from jail and the child had no injuries after being “whipped” by the high pressure water spray.
The video below is the local news story and a short clip of the scene showing the mom spraying her daughter.
